There is so much to see and do
in Highlands/Sandy Hook that you should plan on arriving early.
Caution: in the height of summer weekends the beaches fill
by noon. Not to worry, just take a quick right before the Highlands
bridge and venture up the hill to enjoy a walk through history
at the Twin Lights Museum. Afterwards, have crab cakes, lobster,
or a burger at Off The Hook or Moby's until they reopen the "Hook" at
2:00.
Best kept secret #1 - there are no restrictions
to bicycles. So bring your own, or rent from us. You may come and go
freely onto Sandy Hook with a bike and better yet, no beach pass required.
Best kept secret #2 - NYC folks can take
advantage of the 40 minute SeaStreak ferry ride that docks right at the "Connor" terminal
in town. Everything you need: The GrandLady, Restaurants, Spa services
are all within walking or biking distance.
Best kept secret #3 - the 12 miles of flat
bike path on the "The Hook" takes you passed the pristine beaches,
and the bay filled with wind surfers, through the Holly forest, and ending
at the abandoned Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Lighthouse. Now your hot
and sweaty from that bike trip and that surf looks so inviting but your
swimsuit is back in your room at the GrandLady - never fear.
Best kept secret #4 - take a left on Gunnison
Rd just before the lighthouse to Gunnison Beach: the only legal Nude
beach in the Northeast. It also happens to be one of the friendliest
and secure beaches you'll ever go to.
Best kept secret #5 - Now it's around 6
or 7PM, your clothes are back on, and you're ready for some live entertainment.
Stop at the Seagull's Nest at beach #5 where local musician's will entertain
you on the raised deck over a Piña Colada, and watch the sun go down
over the bay. Also beach #6 hosts a hugh beach concert every Wednesday
at 7PM throughout the summer.
Best kept secret #6 - Now your ready for
some of the best seafood you have ever tasted. All of the restaurants
do a terrific job, but none better than Restaurateur of the Year - Doris
and Ed's. The best water views will be had as Bahrs, Windansea, Inlets
Cafe, or The Clam Hut. (See full list here)
Best kept secret #7 - In the fall, walk,
jog, or bike the 16 mile trail system of the 736 acre Hartshorne Woods
Park within walking distance of The GrandLady. Replace the thundering
city sounds with the soft rustle of Autumn leaves. Keep alert and you'll
notice a family of deer, fox, or osprey moving silently along the ridge.
Best kept secret #8 - In the winter months,
the crowds have gone - a perfect time to enjoy the pristine solitude
of Sandy Hook State Park. October and November is still great walking
or biking weather while exploring the seaside the way it was meant to
be. A visit to the ocean is always good for the soul at any time of the
year.

Joseph Stern was already operating the Tripoli, Central, Plaza, Savoy
